Silk Fabric is synonymous with luxury and is in demand. Silkworms that feed on smaller, domestic tree leaves, or mulberry leaves, produce the finer silk, while the coarser silk is produced by silkworms that have fed on oak leaves. Hence the name "Mulberry Silk". We carry Silk imported from Italy, India and China. Italian Silks are known for the radiant brightly colored stripes, such as Black and Licorice. Silk Dupioni is radiant and an excellent choice for home furnishings.

Dupioni is Italian for two, meaning silk that is created with two silkrooms, the resulting silk is heavier, thicker, more lustrous and has horizontal lines, and small nubs in the silk which increases the shine, this type of silk is extremely durable. Silk Taffeta is a glossy, crisp, light weight, smooth woven type of silk made popular in Italy for draperies, evening dresses, wedding dresses, and ball gowns. The word Taffeta means twisted woven, and this is a high end fabric. Most Taffetas are imported from India but many popular color choices are woven in Italy, France, and the United Kingdom. Embroidered and Beaded and Sequined Silks are popular for the bodice of a wedding dress, evening dress, or for a custom bed cover and matching draperies. Fabric embroidered with flowers will bring life to any room.

Silk Charmeuse and Silk/Cottons are a good choice for Bed Sets and Bedroom Draperies. Unlike high thread count cottons, silk does not have a thread count measure but rather a weight system to regulate the industry. This system, known as momme weight is the pounds of silk fabric weighed in a standard of 100 yards by 45 inches wide. Sheets made of silk will usually be comprised of 18 or 19 momme silk or about 3 ounces per linear yard. While our Silk Charmeuse sheets and Bedding are 18-19 momme in weight, Silk Dupioni and Silk Taffeta are 22-36 momme in weight. Silk Bedding can be hand washed, please dry clean Silk Dupioni and Taffeta.

Linen is the oldest fiber used by man and because of its wide spread use is reflective of the general terminology, “bed and bath linens.” Made from the fibers that grow in the stems of the flax plant, linen has the best ability to wick moisture away from the body and dries quickly. Although linen creases and wrinkles more than cotton, it is a stronger fiber than cotton and inherently lasts longer if cared for properly. Bedding made from linen becomes softer after continued use.

All drapery prices are not inclusive of fabric which is purchased separately by the yard, and remember that selection does change on a regular basis so buy as much as you need for your project. We can answer your questions about yardage and measuring and we recommend installing your curtain rods before purchasing your draperies in order to have ready the diameter of your curtain rod, and understand how you plan to hang your draperies and valance.
